February 29, 2008 - Another new home.

On their 3-week birthday, the chicks are 'movin' on up' at least in space to a 4x6 future dropping pit in the coop. See the "Coop" tab for more info on the construction.

My little beauties are loving their new larger quarters not to mention a variety of barn bugs to chase and eat. They still have their heat light for 3 more weeks or so. They are very active, but are still babies and sleep a lot. With more space, their water is staying clean longer--thank you!

The pecking order is beginning to show as one little Brahma (the one least feathered out) tries to boss everyone around. As in the photo below, they don't all allow her (or him?) to do this!

We can see out now!

February 26, 2008 - Feathers

The two Light Brahmas are feathering out differently, or rather one is feathering out much more slowly than her sibling and all the other chicks. in the 1st photo, the Brahma on the right has wing and tail feathers while the one on the right still looks downy, not to mention much larger. This breed is supposed to develop slowly.

The Buff Orpington and especially the Rhode Island Red are looking pretty rough with more feathers now than fluff. The Silver Laced Wyandotte's wing shoulder feathers are beginning to show the lovely feather pattern.

Everyone but the one Brahma now have wing, tail, back and breast feathers. They're not babies anymore!
