Photo Gallery ~ Summer 2011 Now (chicks!) || Winter 11-12 (Click thumbnails for enlargements--Scroll to the bottom for first entry on this page) September 6, 2011 - Bye Bye 4-year-olds We bid farewell to 5 of the oldest girls today. My feed store takes them and I'm sure they end up in a soup pot, but at least I don't have to know. Each of these girls has dramatically slowed down produciton, and two were awfully broody. I kept one Barred Rock from the first year--she is my pet--very friendly and still lays. I'll probably keep one from each season as a pet. Here are the 5 culls and the lucky survivor.
September 1, 2011 - Bye Bye Roos Here are the chicks celebrating 11 weeks. The 2 guys were starting to crow a little so time for them to go. This leaves 10 girls to help fill in the gaps for losses and future culling. There are 6 Barred Rocks and 4 Easter Eggers--poor Rocks get only one picture to represent all 6! This is the extremely friendly Rock--she will come right up and let me lift her even though this group of chicks has had the least contact with me of any babies so far. Just their individual personalities I guess.
Not little babies anymore. At 6 weeks old the chicks have moved to their first outdoor pen. I had to use 2x4" wire to keep them in--some of the Barred Rocks can squeeze through the chain link fencing. A couple more weeks and they will have the entire 'broody' pen to stretch out in.
July 14, 2011 - Chick Progress The chicks are 4 weeks old already--time flies. One of the Easter Eggers looks like a rooster--very big comb and just looks different than the others. Too bad because s/he is going to look beautiful. Barred Rocks seem to beg for black and white photography. A couple fun pics of them too.
June 30, 2011 - A death in the family Why oh why is it that the most beautiful or most photogenic chickens in my flock die? My lovely Silver Laced Wyandotte lay beyond suffering in the yard this evening. She was surrounded by her flockmates--funny how they stand guard. Here are pictures of this lovely girl who was just short of her first birthday.
The little darlings are growing so fast. They still huddle when I come in, but if I sit quietly, they quickly calm down and begin doing chicken things. Once again, the EEs are getting most of the attention because I'm comparing their colors as they grow up. Find the current and former evaluations in the Breeds section under the Easter Eggers.
Wing and tail feathers are coming in. So much fun to see the colorful striped and splashed colors--not what they will be as adults so there is still a lot of mystery.
