Photo Gallery ~ Summer 2009 Now (Click thumbnails for enlargements--Scroll to the bottom for first entry on this page) August 24 , 2009 - Life on the Farm The old girls' feathers look pretty bad. The production gals, especially the Light Brahma needs a new coat! The Barred Rock pictured here also shows tattered feathers. Marans or Barrerd Rock? The little girl in the 4th photo lays a very dark brown egg and feathers are darker than a Barred Rock, but she has yellow legs and beak. She is extremely friendly and follows me everywhere. The EE in the final photo is one of two I'm not sure is laying yet. July 21, 2009 - Chickens and Eggs The youngster Sex Links, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Red and one Easter Egger are laying and all of the eggs are now in the nests. Their small eggs surround a normal egg laid by one of their older flockmates. The 4 remaining Easter Eggers are showing no signs of interest in laying. It's fun to watch the hens groom themselves. Below, one of the Sex Links contorts herself. The last picture is a Barred Rock and an Easter Egger kissing. I know they're not really kissing, but doesn't it look like it? July 13/14, 2009 - First Tinted Egg/Another Tinted and Tiny Brown One of the Easter Eggers laid the first tinted egg today (7/13). It was in the dropping pit from overnight. Now we just have to teach her to lay during the day, in the nest! Today (14) the beareded girl was in the nest, but her second egg ended up on the coop floor--closer! We also have another youngster beginning her life's work in a much smaller way but in the nest. I'll have to figure out who did this tiny brown egg. July 2, 2009 - More Summer Over 100 isn't pleasant for man or beast. The first picture is of most of the girls standing in the shade mouths open trying to cool off. #2 is two of the adorable Easter Eggers posing. The Buff Orpington in almost camouflaged in the dry grass. Finally my two Wyandottes (Columbian cover girl in front, Silver Laced behind). Of the two, the Silver Laced is the production egg layer while the Columbian is just a pretty face who lays small eggs and goes broody a lot. June 21, 2009 - Summer We have had more than our share of summer already. I run a garden sprinkler for the girls to cool them and the ground on 90+ degree days. The older girls don't mind getting wet, but the babies hate it. The water makes a thick cover of weeds and mud they all enjoy digging in when the sprinkler is turned off. Dry spots are dust pits. The Easter Eggers (4 of 5 pictured below), have the most interesting feather patterns, and I love their furry cheeks. In 2 or 3 weeks these babies should begin laying. Note on the 'Hot and Sleepy' photo--notice the lower eyelid closes over the eye--the reverse from mammals. Now (Click thumbnails for enlargements--Scroll to the bottom for first entry on this page) |
