Photo Gallery ~ Now, Summer 2010 Now || Spring 10 (more chicks) || Winter 09-10 || Fall 09 || Summer 09 || Spring 09 (Click thumbnails for enlargements--Scroll to the bottom for first entry on this page) With Marek's disease claiming some of the older girls and even infecting one of the last batch of chicks, I'm increasing the numbers again. This time they all got vaccinated--poor little dears. I got 4 of my favorite breed (Barred Rocks), one Light Brahma to replace one lost, and one Silver Laced Wyandotte, just because I like them. The little white EE rooster was returned to the feed store when I went to pick up the new chicks--I just don't want any fellas.
And here are a few of my one-year-old girls posing for me.
July 29, 2010 - Broody Blind Chick Blind Chick has been broody often already this summer so since the babies are pretty young to experience an adult (they live in the broody pen), I'm letting her brood. Here are a couple photos of her puffing like a turkey when taking her daily stroll. Cranky girl--wish you could hear her growling! Fortunately, she doesn't bite--she only looks and sounds mean.
July 15, 2010 - Chicks move outside At 6 weeks old, the chicks left the brooder for the temporary outdoor pen in the barn. The last 2 sets of chicks have moved outside at 6 weeks and were big enough so they couldn't fit through the fence. Not so with these little girls. Four of them can squeeze through the chain links of the dog run panels we use. So I added more wire and made their space smaller till they grow a bit more. They are still enjoying some dirt to dust in and hopefully they will learn to sleep on the roosts over the new dropping pit. See portraits of the whole gang on the page where I'm documenting their feather colors.
