What Color Will the Easter Egger Chicks Be? December 21, 2011 - 27 Weeks The girls have begun to lay eggs. I think the Blond is the first. They are all looking lovely. Blond2 - snowy white may eventually get a slight yellow tint--very shy girl. Brown2 - light brown with dark gray markings, lovely tan/grey cheeks and beard. Curious. Guinea - rich colors and elaborate markings--my first beardless and cheekless EE. Very shy. Stripe2 - mostly solid redish brown with pale cheeks. Very shy.
September 1, 2011 - 11 Weeks The two guys were returned to the feed store today. :-( At this stage of my color comparison experiments, I can still say yellow chicks will be a very light colored adult. Very black chicks will have a lot of black as adults. After that it's gambling! The heavily marked baby I called Chip2 does have a black head like the first Chip, but the rest of their feathers are nothing alike. Most of the chicks turn into brownish hens with either penciled or laced feather--beautiful in their own right, but this seems to be the dominant color. Blond2 - got a white EE after 2 tries--very shy girl. Brown2 - light brown with dark gray markings, great cheeks/beard. Still the most friendly. Chip2 - rooster - stunning black head and black and white feathers with patches of rust brown. Guinea - richer colors than Brown2--no visible cheeks or beard. Lemon2 - rooster - pure white with a bit of cream beginning to show, couple of brown feathers. Stripe2 - solid redish brown. Still the most shy.
July 28, 2011 - 6 Weeks I think we have 2 roosters now--one of the white chicks has an enlarging red comb and both of these guys have a different stance than the girls. They hold their tail feathers very upright where the girls turn their downward. In a weak moment, I have actually considered keeping a rooster--yikes! Blond2 - both white chicks are beginning to show a slight golden tinge. I'm calling this one the girl. Brown2 - brown lightly barred chest feathers possibly with dark gray on wings. Still the most friendly. Chip2 - I'm convinced now this is a rooster, but he's going to be gorgeous with a black head and black and white feathers. Guinea - richer colors than Brown2--tan chest feathers possibly with lacing. Lemon2 - color looks exactly like Blond2 but this one has a very red comb and I fear is a roo. He usually holds his tail like Chip2 is in his photo. Stripe2 - probably solid redish chest feathers, she may surprise me with some gray markings. Still the most shy.
July 14, 2011 - 4 Weeks Chest feathers are a good indicator of what the adult plumage will be. The two pale colored chicks will both be pure white. They will be hard to tell apart, so I will show the same photo of them at least for now. One looks like a guy--Chip2. This is disappointing because his chest feathers are black and white--very striking and nothing like I've had before. Blond2 - very white wings, chest and head feathers. Golden chicks in the past have had apricot heads--not so this time. Brown2 - she will not look special--brown lightly barred chest feathers. Still the most friendly. Chip2 - this is the suspect fella. Gorgeous black and white chest feathers--big comb. Guinea - probably won't look special but probably prettier than Brown2--tan chest feathers possibly with lacing. Lemon2 - pure white and so far just like Blond2 except she is taking just a bit longer to get her wing cap feathers--same photo. The first white EE we had turned out to be a rooster--hoping these 2 are hens. Stripe2 - still looks a lot like Stripe#1 with solid redish chest feathers. The most shy of all the EEs.
June 30, 2011 - 2 Weeks Wing tips and tails so far. Chest feathers are just beginning to poke through. As to temperment, I think having the EEs mixed with the Barred Rocks makes the EEs more docile. Barred Rocks are the social girls and make the EEs feel more comfortable doing the same. Blond2 - looks very white so far but I suspect her wing cap, chest and head feathers will be apricot or golden colored. Brown2 - wings are black and brown speckled, she is the most friendly of the EEs so far. Chip2 - looks much the same as Chip#1 at this stage. Guinea - elaborate barred feathers--future lacing? Lemon2 - pure white so far, waiting for wing caps, chest and head to see if she will be pure white. Stripe2 - lovely barred wings contrast with her pale fuzz, she looks a lot like Stripe#1.
June 16, 2011 - Baby Easter Eggers These photos of the 1-day-old babies will be the base for comparison as they grow up. I've temporarily named them to track their progress. Once again naming is not creative! Five of the six are very close to colors I've had before so named them #2--we'll see how they turn out. Future photos will appear in this order: |
